Rheumatology & Immunology Department

Brief Introduction

The Department of Rheumatology was set up in 1985, and is a relatively earlier-established department in southwest China. We are authorized to award master’s and doctor’s degree on internal medicine of TCM and Clinical Rheumatology of Integrative Medicine. We are approved as a New Drug Clinical Trial and Research Base by the State Administration for Market Regulation. Our department integrates medical service, teaching and scientific research.

We provide medical service for tens of thousands of outpatients and nearly 3,000 inpatients per year, among whom 8% are difficult and severe cases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatomyositis (myositis), ankylosing spondylitis, scleroderma, vasculitis, adult still disease, gout, Sjogren’s syndrome, etc.

We have 48 beds in inpatient section, 4 specialist outpatient clinics and 2 clinics of famous doctors. Our medical team includes 5 chief physicians (professors), 3 associate chief physicians (associate professors), 4 attending physicians, and 2 residents, 3 famous TCM doctors in Sichuan. We have doctoral and master tutors who have trained nearly 100 students.

Dominant diseases and diagnosis and treatment techniques

We carry out various immune examinations, with joint ultrasound instruments and equipments for various physical therapies. We adopt integrative medicine both internally and externally to treat rheumatic diseases. Characteristic TCM treatment such as oral use, fumigation of Chinese herb, acupuncture and moxibustion, acupoint application, acupoint injection and Chinese herbal application are carried out. We pay attention to regulating viscera, yin and Yang, Qi and blood, channels and collaterals, so as to achieve the purpose of treating both symptoms and root. Various Chinese patent medicines have been developed such as Wuma Fengshi Tablets, Bujin Tablets, Sanqi Pain Relieving Tablets and Tongfengning Oral Liquid, which have shown very little side effect and great efficacy. Positive therapeutic effect has been achieved on systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, systemic sclerosis, systemic vasculitis, Behcet's disease, osteoarthritis, polymyositis / dermatomyositis, etc. Clinical research and treatment on rheumatism has won us a distinguished reputation popularity among patients.

We are good at treating various rheumatology diseases with integrative medicine. The department is equipped with a variety of inspection and treatment equipments, such Samsung Madison ultrasound machine and intelligent Chinese herbs fumigation machine, with first-aid equipment and conditions for clinical research on new Chinese herbs. Special personnels are set for the maintenance of these instruments and equipment.

Scientific Research

We put emphasis on scientific research and have more than 20 projects, such as national key major scientific research project of the "Tenth Five-Year Plan", National Natural Science Foundation of China, National 973, 863 projects and projects of provincial level. We study on a number of clinical diagnosis and treatment protocols of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
