Gastroenterology Department

The Department of Spleen and Stomach Diseases was founded in 1957 by Professor Li Shichi, a famous medical educator, Professor Pu Fuzhou and Professor Ran Pinzhen, famous experts of spleen and stomach diseases; and it was developed to a higher stage by Professor Wang Zaimo, a doctoral tutor. It is one of the earliest-established departments in our hospital. We are authorized to award master's and doctor's degree on Chinese internal medicine, integrative internal medicine. We can award master's degree on gastroenterology (2011). It is a national GCP base (Gastroenterology), key TCM specialty in Sichuan Province, key discipline of Health Commission of Chengdu and Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine, and major disease (ulcerative colitis) prevention and control center of Sichuan Province. We are the chairman of spleen and stomach disease branch of Sichuan Association of Chinese Medicine, standing committee member of spleen and stomach disease branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine, executive director of digestion branch of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, and vice chairman of gastroenterology branch of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine.

We have strong strength in medical, teaching and scientific research. Our department is an important TCM clinical, teaching and scientific research base for Spleen and stomach diseases, as well as a key medical specialty and a key discipline of Sichuan province. In recent years, we have more than 10 scientific research projects above provincial level, such as international evidence-based medicine registration project, general project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, standardization research on guidelines of common clinical disease of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We have held for annual academic conferences of national and provincial level and continuing education training classes of Sichuan many times. We participated in the standardization research of clinical pathway and clinical guidelines of (NATCM), and took part in the revision of a number of professional guidelines and consensus of national level. We have strict management rules and regulations, national and provincial famous TCM experts and a well-structured medical research team with young and middle-aged staff. Thus, our academic achievements have reached advanced level in Sichuan province. We have 36 medical staff, among whom 12 are senior professional titles. We have 67 beds, 5 outpatient clinics, 1 endoscopy center and 1 TCM characteristic treatment room. The annual outpatient attendance exceeds 190000.

We adopt integrative medicine for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Our gastroscope center has advanced electronic gastroscopy like Olympus and Pentax, several sets of electronic colonoscopy, argon knife, several sets of high-frequency and radio frequency therapeutic instruments, one set of Sashi esophageal dilator, 14C-urea breath test laboratory. Electronic gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic hemostasis, prevention and treatment of polyps and early cancer (ESD, EMR), foreign body removal, esophageal dilatation, esophageal stent placement, esophageal variceal ligation, tissue glue and sclerotherapy injection, gastrointestinal tumor interventional therapy are carried out. With the completion of the reconstruction and expansion of the endoscopy center, gastrointestinal dynamics, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic esophageal ultrasound (EUS), encoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) will be carried out. High quality medical service is provided by our skilled, experienced senior medical team for the majority of patients.

We have prominent advantages in characteristic TCM treatment. With a skilled medical and nursing team, we have made diagnosis and treatment scheme and clinical pathway of TCM and integrative medicine for digestive diseases, which is still in consistent research, optimization and improvement. A number of characteristic TCM treatments have been carried out, including moxibustion, auricular point sticking, acupoint application, Chinese medicine improved ironing therapy, acupoint injection, rectal dripping of traditional Chinese medicine, scraping therapy, cupping method, acupoint massage method, external application, etc. 

    We are praised by numerous patients from all over the country. After years of exploration and development, the following TCM dominant diseases forms: chronic nonspecific ulcerative colitis, chronic liver disease, functional gastrointestinal disease, acute and chronic pancreatitis, chronic atrophic gastritis, etc. Positive therapeutic effects have been achieved.  

With excellent medical techniques, we undertake the clinical teaching work of doctoral students, master students, clinical nursing students and international students, as well as the guidance of clinical refresher doctors and nurses from primary hospitals in Sichuan and even throughout China.
