Geriatrics is a secondary discipline developed from Chinese internal medicine. The Department of Geriatrics was established in 1984. We began to recruit postgraduates in 1987 and doctoral students in 1992. The postdoctoral research station was established in 2003, and enrolled postdoctoral on TCM geriatrics in 2007. In 2010, our laboratory of TCM visceral disease syndrome won the special funds of characteristic and advantageous disciplines for local universities by the Ministry of Finance. In 2012, it was approved as the Key Laboratory of universities in Sichuan Province. In 2012, TCM geriatrics was approved as a key discipline of the 12th Five Year Plan by National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM). In 2020, it was approved as geriatric care workshop by Health Commission of Sichuan Province and approved as the key specialty of geriatrics by Sichuan Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We have 53 medical staff, including 2 experts enjoying special allowance of the State Council, 4 famous TCM doctors in Sichuan Province, 1 academic and technical leader and 1 candidate in Sichuan Province, 3 TCM technique leaders and 4 candidates in Sichuan Province. In the past three years, we have won 15 scientific research projects of national and provincial level. 154 papers (including SCI, Chinese core periodical, etc) have been published, and 60 master or doctoral students have been cultivated.

We carry out scientific research on nutrition and metabolism, disease diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation and nursing of the elderly, and explore the occurrence and development rules of common geriatric diseases such as stroke, vertigo, chest pain and lung distention, so as to provide valuable and scientific experimental basis for guiding our clinical practice. Characteristic TCM treatment is carried out in outpatient section, and characteristic TCM preparations for both internal and external use are developed.

We have made TCM diagnosis and treatment schemes for stroke (sequela of stroke), vertigo (hypertension), chest obstruction and heartache (coronary heart disease, angina pectoris) and pulmonary distention (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Scalp acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture are adopted in the treatment of stroke sequelae, scalp acupuncture combined with intradermal acupuncture to improve vertigo, dazhu moxibustion combined with Shu and Mu acupoints to treat chest obstruction, aconite cake moxibustion for diarrhea due to spleen and kidney yang deficiency, and distention-eliminating Reyanbao therapy for functional dyspepsia and abdominal distension. Specialized nursing practice is formed for stroke (sequelae stage), vertigo, chest pain and pulmonary distention. It is a well-known department of geriatrics in Southwest China.
